New policies and regulations for 'Second Units' will be considered by City Council in April 2019.

Different second unit types: basement apartment, second floor apartment, garage suite, coach house.

As required by the Province, Second Units will be permitted in single detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings, in both urban and rural areas.

Second Units can be built as an apartment within a house (like a basement apartment), as part of an accessory building to the main house (like a garage suite), or as a standalone accessory building (like a coach house).

All new Second Unit construction will require a Building Permit from the City’s Building Division.
